A Chocolate Crisis!

The Giant Gumball Machine is Complete!!!

When we knew we were moving we decided we needed a gumball machine for the shop.  So we found one. And it was big.

And so began the Giant Gumball Machine Refurbishment Project (GGMRP).  The GGMRP took us approximately 30 hours to refurbish (when I say us it took me 1.5 hours, my daughter Reese .5 hours and John 28).  We removed all the plexiglass and replaced it with new, completely disassembled it, sanded it (thanks to Reese who learned how to use a palm sander), cleaned it (it was sitting in a field behind someones house) added 5 cans worth or cherry red spray paint and voila'!

In order to have it ready for our grand opening a few weeks ago John stayed up until 5 AM finishing it up. Yay to John for getting it done becuase the GGMRP results are really cool!

Yorkie Chocolate Bar - Its Not For Girls!

What's better than offensive advertising?  Those clever, snarky Britts!

The Yorkie bar, a chunkier alternative to Cadbury's Dairy Milk, was aimed at men. In the 1980s television ads for the Yorkie bar featured truck drivers. In 2001, the ad campaign made this more explicit with the slogan and wrapper tagline It's not for girls, which caused controversy. Nestlé also received complaints about this campaign from Norwegian and UK customers, who found it sexist and distasteful.  In 2006 a special edition that was for girls was sold, wrapped in pink. 

For a time, trains arriving at York railway station would pass a billboard which read "Welcome to" and then a picture of a Yorkie bar, with the end bitten off, so it read "Welcome to York" (and beneath it, the slogan "Where the men are hunky and the chocolate's chunky").

Yorkie was previously composed of six chunks of chocolate, with each chunk featuring one letter from the Yorkie name. More recently, in an effort to reduce cost, the number of chunks has been reduced to five, with "Yorkie" written in full on each chunk.

Sitting on the shelf in our "Candy from the UK" section, it does illicit a lot of attention.  I suppose they did something right as controversy sells!

I would use my usual line about coming down to our Candy Shop and grabbing one but, remember, "Its Not For Girls!", unless you can find that pink one.

Shhhhh...you need to Whispa!

Really we dont want you to keep quiet about it but it made for a catchy title.  This is our first candy blog and what the heck, sometimes cheesy works for me.

So whats all the Whispa-ing about?  The Cadbury Whispa chocolate bar! For you international chocolate lovers, this is similar to an Aero bar, which has aerated chocolate leaving bubbles of air inside the bar.  

We just brought these in last week along with several other UK / British Candy favorites!

Maltesers are similar to the American Whoppers but with a better accent.  A malted center wrapped in chocolate thats delish (and I know because I love Whoppers).


And finally, the Cadbury Cream Egg Twisted Bar.  You know those Cadbury Cream Eggs that you thought were only available at Easter Time?  Think again!  You can now have that gooey rich deliciousness all year round with he Cadbury Cream Egg Twisted Bar!!
