Squirrel Nut Zippers

Not to be mistaken with the band, Squirrel Nut Zippers are delicious nostalgic candy caramels.
Squirrel nut caramel is a chewy caramel candy with pieces of peanuts mixed in. The version we have is caramel based, there was also a version made with chocolate. Squirrel Nut Zippers were developed in the mid 1920s .

Squirrel Nut Caramels were originally made by the Squirrel Brand Company. Squirrel Nut Zippers actually had an interesting beginning.  It was named after an illegal drink during the Prohibition era.  Back in the 1990's the retro swing band of the same name actually gave out the candies during their performance.

After being sold to Southern Style Nuts in 1999, it was purchased in 2004 by Necco brands. In July of 2010, Blooms Candy Shop tasted them, loved them, and brought them in the store.

Smurfalicious Lunchbox!

Three crab apples high, the Smurfs are remembered by me as a Saturday Morning Cartoon Staple.  I was already past the lunch box phase at that point but I totally would have carried one of these in my younger days.

Smurfette and an unidentifiable Smurf dancing with glee in the forest.  (There's no denying Smurfette was a bit of a tart either.)

From the wiki entry ..How the Smurfs came about is an interesting story actually.  The original term schtroumpf and the accompanying language came during a meal Peyo was having with his colleague and friend AndrĂ© Franquin in which, having momentarily forgotten the word "salt" Peyo asked him (in French) to pass the schtroumpf. Franquin replied: "Here's the Schtroumpf — when you are done schtroumpfing, schtroumpf it back" and the two spent the rest of that weekend speaking in schtroumpf language. The name was later translated into Dutch as Smurf, which was adopted in English.

That being said, you don't need to be Brainy Smurf to figure out that you can get these lunchboxes in our Candy Store in Downtown Carrollton.  So Smurf on down and take a look at them before the movie comes out in the fall.  They are sure to be a hot commodity!

Stay Sweet!

Turkish Taffy is Back!

After a long, 20 year hiatus this nougat/taffy is back on the market and we already have it in stock!

This candy was originally sold in Woolworth's stores.  It came in large sheets from which pieces were broken off with a hammer at the counter and sold by weight.  In the late 1940's Bonomo released  the candy-bar size which you could whack against a hard surface to break into smaller pieces. Back in the 1960's a bar was $0.05.

Turkish Taffy became one of the first forms of candy advertised on tv back in 1949.
On July 2, 2010 Turkish Taffy was officially re-released to the general public at IT'SUGAR in Atlantic City and on July 22nd we received it in our candy store in Downtown Carrollton.  We have Banana, Chocolate and Vanilla.

Come smack it & crack it!

Garbage Pail Kids - FLASHBACK

I personally remember coveting and hoarding these things "back in the day".  I was so excited to find them and bring them into the store but as usual, I was met with "Oh. Yeah. Those are cool dear..."  Not exactly the enthusiasm I was looking for but I knew someone else had to be just as excited of me to see this retro candy favorite from the 80's.

Topps Garbage Pail Kids Flashback Trading Card Complete Set [160 Cards]

These aren't new ones, these are our favorites back from the original printing between 85-88.  They include Loco Motion Cards, Original Printing Plates and Multiple Levels of Rare Parallels.

The first day we had them out we sold 5 packs to some awkwardly excited grown men who didnt get one step away from the counter before they started tearing them open.

Ahhhh... memories. :)
